The Dutch Pilotage Service Organisation has commissioned a customised VSTEP NAUTIS simulator to train crews involved in pilot transfer operations. The simulator has been specifically configured to replicate the handling characteristics and bridge layout of the organisation’s pilot tenders.
For the Dutch Pilotage Service Organization (Loodswezen), pilot transfer readiness depends on crews who can act with confidence when weather, traffic, vessel motion, and time pressure converge. To support that need, the organisation chose a NAUTIS simulator solution from VSTEP built around its pilot transfer operation. In March 2026, VSTEP completed the handover of a comprehensive simulator learning ecosystem of products and services designed to strengthen readiness across that operation.

Full Mission Bridge simulator
The solution was configured around the Dutch Pilotage Service Organization’s operational needs for its tender boats. A custom NAUTIS Pilot Boat Simulator in a Full Mission Bridge configuration, together with NAUTIS Instructor Station, gives crews and instructors a training environment designed for pilot transfer operations.
The Full Mission Bridge simulator incorporates vessel-specific controls and interfaces, including Sperry Marine navigation systems, Hamilton propulsion controls and a custom-developed M-class pilot vessel model with two trim configurations. It also includes the Polaris offshore pilot vessel, allowing crews to train in the wider context of pilot transfer operations.

Repeatable scenarios
The system enables instructors to create repeatable training scenarios under varying weather, traffic and sea conditions, while structured debriefing tools allow crews to review decisions and improve performance. According to VSTEP, the simulator is designed to help pilots and tender crews develop vessel familiarity, improve decision-making and safely conduct transfers in demanding conditions.
The installation also includes instructor training, software updates and maintenance support to keep the simulator aligned with operational requirements over the coming years.
