Dutch shipbuilder Thecla Bodewes Shipyards has delivered the 7280-DWT Vertom Willemijn to the Vertom Group. It marks the seventh delivery in a series of twelve state-of-the-art ships, with ten set to join the Vertom Group’s growing fleet.

The collaboration between Vertom Group and Thecla Bodewes Shipyards has resulted in a vessel that represents cutting-edge shipbuilding and environmental responsibility. MV Vertom Willemijn is part of the LABRAX series, a pioneering series of multi-purpose dry cargo vessels designed with an electric propulsion system to meet the growing demand for sustainable shipping solutions.

The handover ceremony took place in Harlingen Seaport, attended by senior representatives from both Vertom Group and Thecla Bodewes Shipyards.

Diesel-electric

MV Vertom Willemijn incorporates a highly efficient diesel-electric propulsion system, designed not only to maximise fuel efficiency, but also to significantly reduce emissions. This advanced system, paired with a sophisticated power management system, ensures lower energy consumption, reduced CO2 emissions, and an overall greener operation. This is a significant achievement for both Vertom Group and Thecla Bodewes Shipyards, who are committed to contributing to the transition towards a CO2 neutral shipping industry.

‘Each delivery of a LABRAX vessel is special, even after seven successful launches,’ says Thecla Bodewes, CEO of Thecla Bodewes Shipyards. ‘The collaboration with Vertom Group exemplifies our dedication to driving innovation and sustainability in shipbuilding. MV Vertom Willemijn showcases our team’s expertise, and our mission to meet and exceed global environmental standards.’

LABRAX vessels demonstrate energy savings

The MV Vertom Willemijn shows a commitment to high operational performance and a reduced impact on the environment. With a length of 118.60 metres, a beam of 14.30 metres, and a full-box cargo hold of 329,700 cubic feet, the vessel provides an efficient and competitive solution for transporting goods. The diesel-electric system onboard lowers propulsion power requirements compared to traditional vessels of similar size, ensuring improved fuel consumption and cost-efficiency.

The performance of the MV Vertom Willemijn mirrors that of the six earlier vessels in the series, including the MV Vertom Patty, MV Vertom Cyta, MV Vertom Tomma, MV Vertom Anne Marit, MV Vertom Anette, and MV Vertom Lisa. Each of these vessels has already demonstrated impressive results in terms of energy savings and emissions reduction, cementing the LABRAX series as a leading example of modern, sustainable shipping.
