The Dutch Government’s organisation for public works Rijkswaterstaat has started preparations for an innovation partnership with the maritime, offshore and cargo infrastructure industries. The aim is to develop, design and build three all-electric emergency response and towage vessels (ERTVs) with associated charging facilities for the North Sea.

On 16 October 2024, Rijkswaterstaat will organise a market consultation to explore this innovative assignment together with the market. The ships will become part of the government shipping company (Rijksrederij) fleet.

Innovation at sea

These ships ensure the safety of shipping at sea. They will run virtually emission-free on batteries by charging them ashore and at sea; only during emergency rescue activities will they run on green e-methanol. In short, an integrated, sustainable solution for emergency rescue in the North Sea.

Rijkswaterstaat wants to involve the market at an early stage to share relevant information and get clear(er) what is needed to realise the innovative system of electric Emergency Response Towing Vessels (ERTVs) with associated charging facilities.

This partnership offers an opportunity to concretely link innovation and procurement and take the sustainability of shipping to the next level.
