Vladimir Putin has announced that Russia’s warships will be equipped with the most modern hypersonic weapons. According to the Russian President, the weapons, which he said are unique in the world, will expand the Russian navy’s fighting capability.
The Russian Ministry of Defence also informed Russian news agency Interfax about successful tests of the Zirkon cruise missile specially designed for the Navy. The hypersonic weapons reach a speed of about 343 metres per second. They are considered the weapon of the future.
Work will also continue on the nuclear-powered underwater torpedo Poseidon. The sea drone is intended to destroy targets on the coast. The president went on to say that forty new ships will come into service this year alone in the individual fleet units of the largest country in the world.
‘Russia has the largest coastal area in the world. The navy has reliably protected Russia for 300 years,’ Putin said on the country’s Navy Day, celebrated by sailors throughout the country.
In many other Russian coastal towns, the naval forces also celebrated Navy Day with parades. In Syria, where Russia is fighting alongside ruler Bashar al-Assad, the army showed its strength at an arms show in the Mediterranean port of Tartous. Ammunition was also fired. In a video published by the Ministry of Defence, not only warships, including a submarine, but also attack helicopters and jets were shown.
