The website and customer platform of the second largest container carrier in the world was offline from Thursday 9 April up to 15 April. The company has now announced the cause was ‘a malware attack based on an engineered targeted vulnerability.’

The attack was said to have been limited to a number of physical computer systems in Geneva only. Despite the attack, the company said its services and operations continued as usual.

The company has said on its website it will not ‘be commenting further in detail on this point, as this would be counter-productive from a security perspective. If in due time we feel that there are any important lessons or best practices to learn, we will share information via the appropriate industry forum or directly with other companies.’

MSC has shared the malware with technology partners so that mitigations could be made available to other companies as well.
