The Falkland Islands Government has selected the British subsidiary of Dutch contractor BAM to design and build a new port in Stanley Harbour. BAM Nuttall Ltd was selected after an extensive global procurement process.

The aim is for the contract to be agreed and signed by the end of March 2020. This new port, to be built near the current, outdated Stanley Harbour on East Falkland, is to support the economy and enable ongoing future economic growth.

Tenderers were asked to review the most suitable location for a new port and propose their location as part of their tender returns. The new facility is to service the fishing, tourism and shipping sectors, as well as many other parts of the economy.

The project has been split into three stages, with decision gateways between each stage. BAM Nuttall must first produce a preliminary draft with a cost estimate and then a detailed draft with implementation planning. This is followed by construction. The project will conclude with de-commissioning and removal of the existing port facility.
