Several cruise companies have cancelled trips in Asia due to the outbreak and spread of the coronavirus. The American cruise companies Royal Caribbean and Carnival, among others, keep their ships in port.

For Royal Caribbean, the ship Spectrum of the Seas sails through Asian waters. According to the company, this is the only ship in the fleet that is located in China. The planned sailings on 27 and 31 January have been cancelled. The 347-metre long ship can accommodate up to 4905 passengers. Holidaymakers who had booked the cruise will receive a refund.

Carnival also announced that journeys with daughter Costa Cruises have been cancelled. This part of the company had nine departures scheduled for the coming days. In consultation with Chinese authorities, these will be temporarily suspended.

Cancelled cruises will impact financial results

China is a growing market for American cruise companies. According to market experts, the cancellations will become noticeable in the financial results of the companies. Bookings will be refunded.

On the stock exchange in New York, Caribbean and Carnival lost up to 7.5 per cent in stock market value. Norwegian Cruise Line lost almost three per cent.
