KNVTS lecture: Damen Air Cavity System (DACS) helps ships save fuel

March 21

Reducing the vessel’s resistance lowers fuel/energy consumption and emissions. DACS works by forming stable air cavities on the flat bottom of a ship. This innovative approach reduces the wetted surface area and therefore lowers the vessel’s drag. The concept, which stems from a research project at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Netherlands, shows high overall efficiency and contributes significantly to reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The presentation will cover the theoretical background, share experimental results from laboratory tests and highlight full-scale application results.
