MARIN has joined the newly launched Worldwide Alliance for Vessel Decarbonization & Energy Transition (WAVE). The cluster aims to accelerate the integration, testing and validation of emerging technologies for reducing shipping emissions.
WAVE brings together MARIN with Alpha Marine Consulting, Lomarlabs and C-Job Naval Architects. The partners combine expertise in ship operations, marine engineering, naval architecture, ship design and independent technology assessment.
The initiative targets technologies at Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 3 to 7. These solutions have demonstrated technical potential, but still require integration, testing and operational experience before they can be commercially deployed.

From development to deployment
WAVE is intended to help technology developers bridge the gap between laboratory development and practical application on board ships. The partners will assess selected technologies and determine how they can be integrated and validated, taking their maturity and specific requirements into account.
This includes addressing vessel integration, safety requirements, classification considerations and operational constraints. The cluster will also help identify subsidy and co-funding opportunities for pilot projects.
For shipowners, WAVE aims to provide a structured way to assess emerging technologies and gain experience with their application while reducing the risks associated with early-stage deployment.

Complementary expertise
Each of the four founding partners has a specific role. Alpha Marine Consulting brings marine engineering, naval architecture and technical integration expertise, while Lomarlabs contributes experience in supporting technology start-ups and access to vessels through its parent company, Lomar. C-Job provides ship design and naval architecture expertise, and MARIN contributes maritime research, assessment and independent validation capabilities.
Patrick Hooijmans, Senior Project Manager at MARIN: ‘Assessment of solutions in real operations. WAVE puts solutions to the test by combining shipowners, design offices and independent evaluators knowledge with the aim of sharing outcomes and gained experience with its partners.’

WAVE open for members
WAVE is inviting organisations from across the maritime sector to join the cluster. The initiative aims to build a network of partners involved in developing and deploying technologies that can support the decarbonisation of shipping.
