The air defence and command frigate HNLMS De Ruyter and minehunter HNLMS Willemstad will return to the Netherlands. Meanwhile, frigate HNLMS Evertsen will soon depart for the Middle East. The rotation will ensure operational readiness while keeping the option open for a future deployment to the Strait of Hormuz.
Defence Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius said this in a letter to the House of Representatives on 7 September.
Yeşilgöz: ‘The security situation in and around the Strait of Hormuz remains unpredictable. The Netherlands stands ready to contribute to de-escalation and freedom of navigation, and we remain closely involved in the military planning for the multinational mission. Many thanks to the men and women of both De Ruyter and Willemstad for their readiness, commitment, professionalism and flexibility. Of course, our thanks also go to those at home. It is a welcome prospect that many will soon be able to embrace their loved ones again.’

Decision on Hormuz mission still to be taken
The Strait of Hormuz is vital to the global economy, making free and safe passage crucial. The Netherlands is part of a large international coalition planning the Multinational Military Mission for the Strait of Hormuz. The coalition is led by France and the United Kingdom.
The Dutch government has not yet made a final decision on an active military contribution to the mission. Once a decision has been made, the House of Representatives will be informed in accordance with Article 100 of the Dutch Constitution.

Evertsen to take place of Willemstad and De Ruyter
Over the past three months, HNLMS Willemstad has been pre-positioned in the Mediterranean. During this period, the minehunter contributed to NATO’s standing mine countermeasures naval group operating in the region.
In June, HNLMS De Ruyter also set course for the waters around the Strait of Hormuz. In recent weeks, the ship has operated mainly in the Arabian Sea, carrying a multinational staff. HNLMS Evertsen will take over De Ruyter’s duties within the next few weeks.
