Den Norske Krigsforsikring for Skib (DNK) has launched an innovative programme to provide members access to Assured Positioning, Navigation and Timing (A-PNT) services. These services can counter the growing risk of jamming and spoofing.

The initiative allows shipowners to choose from approved A-PNT suppliers and could help lower insurance premiums. According to DNK, which is Norway’s leading war risk mutual insurance provider, interference with satellite navigation signals has increased sharply in recent years, particularly in the Black Sea, Baltic Sea, Persian Gulf and Red Sea.

DNK says signal disruption can increase the risk of collisions and groundings, while spoofing may even direct vessels into restricted or sanctioned waters.

Iridium LEO network

The programme is based on Iridium Communications’ global network of 66 low-earth-orbit satellites, which DNK says provides a much stronger and harder-to-disrupt signal than conventional Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) systems.

The subscription-based systems are designed to be affordable, easy to install and require minimal crew training. Optional onboard units can also provide crews with additional situational awareness.
