The Dutch Ministry of Defence intends to integrate the French F21 MK2 torpedo into the four new Orka-class submarines during the production phase. The original plan was to equip them initially with the MK48 torpedoes currently used by the Walrus-class fleet.
Defence has now decided against the first plan, as accelerated replacement of the MK48 has proven feasible.
The new submarines are designed to operate across the full spectrum of conflict. Due to rapid technological developments, Defence anticipates threats from manned and unmanned enemy systems equipped with anti-torpedo countermeasures. To counter these with high precision, an advanced heavyweight torpedo such as the F21 MK2 is required.

Closer cooperation with France
The supplier of this weapon system is the French Naval Group, which is also building the submarines. The choice of the F21 MK2 strengthens cooperation with France. This EU and NATO partner uses the same weapon system. Sharing knowledge on deployment tactics will enhance its operational effectiveness.
Delivery of the first submarine is scheduled from 2033 onward.
