During the night from Sunday to Monday, a fire broke out in the cargo hold of a vessel that was partly in a covered dock at Damen Shiprepair Harlingen at the time. A large amount of smoke was released, but the fire was quickly brought under control.

According to Dutch maritime news outlet Schuttevaer, the vessel involved was the 89.12-metre general cargo ship Marry S, built in 1997 and sailing under the Dutch flag. The vessel is owned by Sierra Maritiem and the company reported on Facebook on 9 January that the vessel had arrived at the shipyard for major maintenance.

Fryslân Veilig reported the fire on 12 January at 01:47. The local fire brigade experienced difficulties reaching the site due to icy road conditions.

Swift response

Thanks to the swift initial response and firefighting efforts, the fire was prevented from spreading further. Subsequent inspections of the hold, the vessel and the shed confirmed that there were no remaining hotspots.

The fire was declared under control at 02:09. This was followed by ventilation of both the shed and the vessel. The fire brigade then scaled down operations and most units returned to their stations.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
