In a major step towards sustainable inland shipping, Rotterdam-based sand and transport company ROS has ordered a fully electric pusher tug from Kotug. The so-called E-Pusher M is equipped with EST-Floattech’s containerised battery solution. The Octopus Series Lite modules inside the container enable emission-free sand transport between Maasvlakte and Rotterdam.

The E-Pusher is a key link in the fully emission-free transport chain ROS is currently developing. The project includes several innovations, among them a 1 MW fast-charging station with an MCS plug (Megawatt Charging System) for the tug — a first for the Rotterdam region — in which EST-Floattech is also involved.

Thanks to this innovative charging infrastructure, the E-Pusher can be fully recharged in a short time, improving operational efficiency and strengthening zero-emission transport. EST-Floattech contributed to making the battery system compatible with MCS charging and also helped design the onshore charging solution. The E-Pusher M has now entered service with ROS and has already completed several successful operations in Rotterdam.

Visit from Alderman Zeegers

On 31 October, Rotterdam alderman Chantal Zeegers (Climate, Air Quality and Energy) visited the project. During her visit, she learned about EST-Floattech’s role in the maritime energy transition and the impact of the collaboration between EST-Floattech, Padmos, Jansma Shipping, Kotug, and ROS on the Rotterdam region.

‘This pusher tug shows what’s possible when Dutch companies invest together in sustainable innovation,’ said Zeegers. ‘The ROS E-Pusher, equipped with EST-Floattech’s battery system, is a strong example of technology that makes operations more efficient while helping to green the maritime sector. Together, Dutch companies are building a sustainable future for the Port of Rotterdam.’

The right capacity for the sailing profile

Marco Kruithof, Director of ROS: ‘Thanks to EST-Floattech’s battery system, the pusher can operate fully electrically — with no noise or CO2 emissions. EST-Floattech was an important knowledge partner in developing the project, ensuring the right capacity on board for the sailing profile and helping design the best charging solution.’
