The Dutch and Belgian navies aim to deepen their cooperation in the maritime domain. Both countries intend to increase the effectiveness of their naval forces. They are also determined to continue countering Russian aggression at sea and to support Ukraine in its defence efforts.
This commitment was formally laid down by Dutch Minister of Defence Ruben Brekelmans and his Belgian counterpart Theo Francken at the end of June. The agreement was signed aboard the Combat Support Ship Den Helder.
Belgium and the Netherlands have long been partners in promoting international stability, peace and security.

Strength of maritime partnership
The two nations work together not only through NATO, the European Union (EU) and the United Nations (UN), but also through bilateral initiatives such as the successful Admiral Benelux command, which highlights the strength of their maritime relationship.
There are several examples of effective collaboration between the countries. One is the joint procurement of Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) frigates from Damen Shipyards. Another is their joint acquisition of Mine Countermeasure Vessels.

Outlining shared ambitions
Belgium and the Netherlands plan to coordinate and jointly purchase more maritime equipment. There is also a shared ambition to strengthen the technological and economic base through cooperation with industry. For example, the Belgian company FN Herstal can play a key role, particularly in the field of unmanned systems. In addition, Belgium operates a large munitions factory, which the Netherlands could make greater use of, as the Minister noted. Conversely, Belgium could benefit from drone technology produced by VDL in the Netherlands.
All of these initiatives will take into account national interests, regulations and existing commitments. Research and innovation are also key priorities. In this area, the two countries aim to launch joint initiatives, particularly in the field of technology.
