Last weekend, Zwijndrecht-based Quinto Shipping BV reached a milestone with the christening of its new tanker MT Quinto, a design by Concordia Damen. The vessel, which is currently being completed at CCM3, marks the family company’s switch from container transport to tanker transport.

For the Nanninga family – father Luit and sons Nick and Renko – it also marks the start of a new era, after several turbulent years. Co-owner Nick Nanninga: ‘Many people choose a ship as a “moneymaker”, but Renko and I really wanted to reinvent ourselves and thought long and hard about it.’

The CDS Tanker 110 ultimately proved to be the best fit for Quinto Shipping‘s new strategy. ‘The vessel combines low resistance and shallow draught with greater cargo capacity than comparable vessel types,’ says Renko Nanninga. ‘In addition, we were pleasantly struck by the spacious accommodation. With this tanker, we can also sail up the Rhine at low tide and to almost any destination in Europe. That offers a piece of operational security. What is also important: the sailing profile also makes our operation more environmentally friendly per tonne of cargo transported.’

Parsifal-type tanker

Quinto Shipping has opted for a tanker of the Parsifal type. This new generation of mineral (oil and light chemicals) tankers was developed by Concordia Damen itself and several are already operational. This type of tanker measures 110 x 11.45 metres and has a large carrying capacity at a very shallow draught (2875 tonnes at 3.25 metres).

According to the shipyard, the efficient hull shape creates an optimal “speed-power curve”. After all, the ship reaches a high speed with relatively low power: more than 22 km per hour with 2 x 500 kW engines. The ship, with its home port of Zwijndrecht, near Rotterdam, will sail with Caterpillar engines and is Stage V compliant.

The stern side installation will be split into two “houses”; a house for the family and a house for the crew. In addition, the design is adapted on a number of points to the specific wishes of the owner. CCM3, part of Concordia Damen Shipbuilding, was chosen for the installation and finishing of the vessel.

Double piping system

The Quinto will sail for a German customer who indicated at a very early stage that it wanted to be able to transport two types of cargo at the same time. This was possible by applying a double pipings system on the tanker.

The cooperation between Quinto Shipping and Concordia Damen has a long history. Founder Luit Nanninga already knew Concordia Damen director Chris Kornet from both their time on board. Now his sons are continuing that relationship.

Delivery of the ship is scheduled for the second quarter of 2025. After that, the ship will be commissioned on a multi-year order from a German client.
