The hydrographic survey vessel HNLMS Luymes is the flagship of the Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1 for the next four months. This is one of two permanent NATO fleet deployments consisting of mine countermeasures vessels.
One of its main tasks is clearing explosives. This is done in the North Sea, Baltic Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Control of the group of ships is in the hands of the Belgian navy. The two countries have been cooperating intensively for years.
The mine countermeasure fleet aims to clear the assigned area of operations of, among other things, sea mines and other projectiles. This enables partner naval vessels to operate there safely and also allows civilian shipping a safe passage.
While working, the fleet also displays military presence, which should lead to deterrence. Furthermore, there is frequent training together within the naval alliance to maintain readiness.

Hydrographic survey vessel
HNLMS Luymes is a hydrographic survey vessel that closely maps the seabed, navigation channels and harbours. Whether the naval vessel will do the same next period is not clear. That depends on any request. Finally, the ship is capable of deploying unmanned systems.
Later, minehunter HNLMS Schiedam will join the NATO fleet partnership.
