The future HNLMS Den Helder was briefly docked at Den Helder for the first time on 12 December. Later that day, the new Combat Support Ship (CSS) performed ship-to-ship transfer procedures at sea with HNLMS Friesland as a test.

The CSS was at Den Helder for a logistics stop. Equipment and goods were loaded on board. These are needed for the completion of the supply ship. The CSS left again after a few hours for its next stop in Vlissingen.

The Den Helder is currently on its sea trials. The CSS is being extensively tested on many fronts. One of these tests is a so-called replenishment at sea (RAS). In this, the CSS performed the procedures to refuel another ship at sea, including tying up all installations and going through the operations.

Extensive testing

So far, the CSS’ sea trials are going well. The vessel left Damen Shipyards’ yard in Galaţi, Romania, at the end of November. In recent weeks, all kinds of navigation, technical and safety systems have been tested. Think of the propulsion system and engines, but also the fire installation. Therefore, in addition to crew members, Damen employees and sub-suppliers are on board.

The ship arrived at Damen Naval in Vlissingen in the morning of 13 December. There, further outfitting of the ship will follow. In spring 2025, the ship will officially call at its home port of Den Helder for the first time. The ship’s christening will follow in early 2025.
