The Ship of the Year Award is a broad recognition of Dutch shipyards for their innovative strength. This year, the KNVTS has nominated Royal Huisman’s yacht Sarissa, Holland Shipyards’ emission-free ferry Gorinchem XII and Kooiman Marine Group’s water injection dredger for Van Oord, Rijn.
The ship that wins the prestigious award is literally thé figurehead of Dutch shipbuilding. The award will be presented at the Maritime Awards Gala on Monday, 4 November at Studio 21 in Hilversum, the Netherlands. Other awards presented at this event are the Maritime Achievement Award, the Maritime Innovation Award, the Maritime Talent Award and the Maritime Security Award.
Ships that qualify for the Ship of the Year 2024 must – especially with regard to innovative aspects – have been developed in the Netherlands, have preferably been built (for at least a large part) in the Netherlands and must have been delivered between 1 May 2022 and 30 April 2023. The jury will assess the submitted ships against the criteria Design, Economy, Sustainability and Environment, Safety and Construction Process.

Sarissa
Royal Huisman has managed to seriously raise the bar for super sailing yachts again with Sarissa. The yacht features a host of complex sail systems such as a whole load of below-deck winches for halyards, sheets and runners and an impressive lift keel. The retractable propulsion is an innovation in itself. Everything is ingeniously engineered and built into the very limited space characteristic of superyachts.

Gorinchem XII
The Gorinchem XII, built by Holland Shipyards Group, is a lightweight zero-emission ferry developed for the municipality of Gorinchem. The vessel can transport 100 people and 100 bicycles with low energy consumption and can be operated by just one person. Together with the charging system and the new landing pier in the ports for all water levels, a total transport system has been delivered. This sets a new standard.

Rijn
The Rijn is one of the two latest water injection vessels built by Kooiman Marine Group for dredging contractor Van Oord. Water injection dredging is a dredging technique in which water is injected just above the bottom with a water injection beam. The vessel is equipped with a dynamic positioning (DP) system, which allows dredging to be highly pre-programmed and more efficient. The applied power management system is based on practical data with which the software has been optimised resulting in minimal emissions.
