Advertorial – With the rise of electric ship propulsion, has the end of using gearboxes arrived? Not according to the experts at ADS van STIGT, in fact an era of new possibilities is dawning.
Gearboxes make an excellent combination with diesel-electric drive lines in ships where high-speed, low-torque electric motors provide propulsion. This allows shipbuilders and shipowners to opt for standard electric motors, often even lighter and smaller in size. By using a twin input/single output gearbox (two electric motors on one propeller shaft), propulsion can also be carried out redundantly.
With this philosophy, ADS van STIGT, together with Finnish brand Katsa, will supply a new type of gearbox for seven seagoing vessels with electric propulsion in 2024/2025. Read more about updates in this project at www.linkedin.com/company/ads-van-stigt or www.vanstigt.com.
