Cracks have been found in the transformers of the diesel-electric propulsion system of HNLMS Karel Doorman that could cause short circuits. Repair of the transformers is not possible, so they have to be replaced. The Joint Support Ship will not be deployable for the rest of the year.

A recent inspection of the transformers revealed the defects. The transformer defects are separate from the problems with the electric motors that had to be replaced in 2016.

Defence has since drawn up a plan with Damen Shipyards and the supplier of the transformers for the replacement.

With a length of 204.7 metres and a displacement of 27,800 tonnes, HNLMS Karel Doorman is the largest ship of the Royal Netherlands Navy.
