Building one dredger at two different shipyards on different continents. Royal IHC did it.
The 4200 m3 trailing suction hopper dredger D11-21 De Julio is currently being built for Administración Nacional de Puertos (ANP), Montevideo. Two sections were built at Royal IHC in the Netherlands, the rest at Astillero SCRA, Montevideo.
On 12 November 2016, Royal IHC won the contract to design, build and deliver the D11-21 De Julio. On 25 October 2017, building simultaneously commenced at both the IHC yard in Krimpen aan den IJssel, the Netherlands, and Astillero SCRA, Montevideo. The fore and aft, including the engine room and pump room, were completed at IHC. Astillero SCRA is building the midsection under supervision by IHC. The complex dredging equipment and spare parts will also be delivered by IHC.
Leaving the Building Dock
On 24 April, both sections were driven to the quay using self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs). There, Bonn & Mees' floating sheerlegs Matador 3 hoisted the sections onto the pontoon Lastdrager 24. The fore section weighed 553 t and the aft section 702 t. Presumably, it is the first time a trailer suction hopper dredger left an IHC yard in this fashion.
Onto the Fairpartner
The pontoon was then towed to the Waalhaven in Rotterdam and placed next to Jumbo Heavy Lift's heavy lift vessel Fairpartner. Using the Fairpartner's own cranes, the sections were placed on board. On 26 April, the Fairpartner left Rotterdam to arrive in Montevideo on 14 May. The next day, the fore and aft of the dredger were unloaded and placed in Astillero SCRA's building dock to be welded to the mid section.
The D11-21 De Julio is scheduled for delivery in November 2018 and will be deployed to dredge the rivers Uruguay and La Plata.
