The Maritime Designer Award jury has presented its two nominees for the 2018 edition of the award.

The two designers that have been nominated are:

  • Gijsbert van Marrewijk (Berthan Research) – research  into the application of T-foils on fast ships; and
  • Roy de Winter (C-Job Naval Architects & Engineers) – a methodology to speed up the ship design process.

Maritime Designer Award

The Maritime Designer Award is presented to individual designers, PhD students, graduates and start-ups who want to bring their work and approach to the attention of the public. The "Samenwerkende Maritieme Fondsen" (collaborative maritime foundations) make a maximum of € 24,000 available to the winner to financially stimulate further development of the design method or solution.

The winner will be announced at the Maritime Awards Gala on 12 November.

Gijsbert van Marrewijk

In his research and development project for the "Solar Boat Single Track Hydrofoil", Gijsbert van Marrewijk has developed and tested a new system for the control of T-foils. For this type of foil, resistance losses are much lower than for usual foil configurations. A special feature of this system is the stabilisation method, which makes it easy to operate the system in both still water and in waves. Safe navigation has been demonstrated by means of tests. Together with the Rotterdam Watertaxi, he is currently investigating the first practical application of this system.

Roy de Winter

Roy de Winter has been able to demonstrably accelerate the design process with the "Accelerated Concept Design" method. What is innovative about this, is the application of insights from mathematical optimisation techniques. As a result, far fewer iterations are required, which speeds up the optimisation process. This application is used in the design activities of C-Job to determine better optimal solutions in the often short time available for the design.
