Netherlands Maritime Technology (NMT) has announced its Maritime Innovation Award 2018 nominees.

From a record number of 26 entries, the jury selected the 6 most appealing to give a presentation. From these 6, the 3 nominees were selected:

  • Mampaey Offshore Industries with its Intelligent Dock Locking System;
  • Veth Propulsion with the Veth Integrated L-drive; and
  • Fleet Cleaner with its Fleet Cleaner.

The winner will be announced at the Maritime Awards Gala on 12 November this year.

Intelligent Dock Locking System

Mampaey Offshore Industries' Intelligent Dock Locking System is an automatic magnetic mooring system. This system allows faster and safer mooring procedures. It is flexible and modular and can be used on ships, terminals and in ports. The jury praised the true maritime innovation, the practical applicability and the way in which this system increases safety on board.

Veth Integrated L-drive

The Veth Integrated L-drive from Veth Propulsion is an extremely compact rudder propeller with an integrated permanent magnet motor. This 360 degree-controlled propulsion system is quiet and has a high efficiency. The system saves space and is prepared for the future of electric sailing. The jury was impressed by the good design, the broad applicability and the way in which market demand was met.

Fleet Cleaner

Fleet Cleaner removes the growth of the ship's skin from seagoing vessels during loading and unloading in the port using a robot developed in-house. This allows shipping companies to save 5-10% on fuel and there is no downtime. The difficult environment in which the system operates, the operational and environmental improvements compared to the current process with divers and the way in which the system is marketed as a service, are impressive according to the jury.
