Bosphorus
The Turkish Straits are a series of internationally significant waterways in northwestern Turkey that connect the Aegean and Mediterranean seas to the Black Sea. They consist of the Dardanelles, the Sea of Marmara, and the Bosphorus.
The Bosphorus is a narrow "S-shaped" channel of complex nature with several sharp turns and headlands and with changing currents. It is about 30 km long and 700 m wide. It connects the Sea of Marmara with the Black Sea in the north. It runs through the city of Istanbul, making it a city located on two continents. It is crossed by three suspension bridges, the Bosphorus Bridge, the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge (where this accident occurred) and the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge. Approximately 132 vessel transit the Bosphorus every day.
