(SWZ Article) Until very recently, batteries on board of merchant ships were used for such services as emergency lighting, alarm systems and engine starting, but not for real power supply, let alone propulsion. Yet, this is changing.

More and more ships have been and are being fitted with large battery installations in connection with hybrid propulsion or even for full-electric ships. Why are these ships provided with batteries?
