Indonesia has the largest sea area and number of islands in the world. It has some 17,000 islands scattered in the archipelago region. Nearly 65 per cent of its population of 261 million live in coastal and marine areas, making it an eldorado for the maritime industry.

Such a country can only prosper with good shipping connections and associated infrastructure. This gives the maritime sector a strategic role in the Indonesian economy. The current government recognises these facts and is taking strong measures.
