On 3 December 2017, the section with the LNG tanks of the AIDAnova (AIDA Cruises' new vessel) was towed through the Kiel Canal (Germany) on its way from shipyard Neptun Werft in Rostock Warnemünde (Germany) to shipyard Meyer Werft in Papenburg (Germany).

Never before in cruise history has such a large section with LNG tanks been built for a cruise ship, also making it the largest cruise ship section to be transported between two shipyard locations. The AIDAnova's LNG section is approcimately 42 m wide and 120 m long.

The video below shows the section being towed throught the Kiel Canal (video by Unimedien). Due to the high water level, at minute 0:32 the port side stabilizer can partly be seen in close-up. The aerial view at minute 2:53 was taken from the Grünentaler viaduct.

AIDAnova

The AIDAnova is the first ship of new Helios-Class and will be built by Meyer Werft for cruiseline AIDA Cruises. The ship will exceed 180,000 gross tons, making it the largest cruise ship ever built in Germany, and has a capacity of more than 2500 staterooms. It will join the AIDA fleet in 2018 followed by a sister vessel in 2021 after which another 5 ships will follow.

With the “Green Cruising” concept, the AIDAnova will be the first cruise ship in the world to be powered primarily by LNG. This eliminates emissions of soot particles and sulfur oxides.
