On 30 November, the Rijnhaven in Rotterdam will form the setting for a live demostration of smart shipping.

We are at the beginning of a new phase in the shipping industry. Knowledge and expertise remain crucial: technology is becoming more and more important. For example, steering ships remotely, smarter sharing of information,  optimisation of waterway maintenance or (nearly) fully automated sailing. This offers new opportunities for taking challenging steps in the area of sustainability, safety and efficiency.

In 2016, the Netherlands put itself on the map when it comes to automated driving with the EU Truck Platooning Challenge. On 30 November, a demo for the shipping industry will be organised: the Smart Shipping Challenge 2017.

Smart Shipping Challenge 2017

The Netherlands – as thé European country for inland shipping and recreational sailing – invests a lot in the use of the waterway network. To prepare for the future, it is time to start putting smart shipping into practice. This will be done through different ways, including more field demonstrations, such as the Smart Shipping Challenge 2017 (in short: SMASH!).

The knowledge and experiences of existing initiatives, technologies, knowledge institutes and various market players will be used for this event. Rijkswaterstaat (part of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment and responsible for the design, construction, management and maintenance of the main infrastructure facilities in the Netherlands) will organise the challenge that will bring parties together to learn and profit from each other's knowledge.

Companies/individuals that have agreed to participate include Shipping Factory, inland shipping entrepreneur William Gerritsma, Nedcargo, the National Shipping Company, Geo Shipping and Van Berkel Logistics.

To participate or contribute, visit the SMASH! website.
