The US Navy has published two timelapse videos showing the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS John S McCain (DDG 56) being moved in preparation for on load to the semi-submersible heavy lift vessel MV Treasure.
Dockwise's Treasure transported the McCain to Fleet Activities Yokosuka for repairs.
The USS John S. McCain was involved in a collision with the merchant vessel Alnic MC while underway east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore on 21 August. Ten US sailors were killed in the incident.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the facts and circumstances of the collision. Some sources report a failure of the aft steering mechanism as the cause, but the US Navy is also looking into a possible human error or cyber attack.
Damage to the portside is visible as the guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) steers towards Changi Naval Base, Republic of Singapore. Significant damage to the hull resulted in flooding to nearby compartments, including crew berthing, machinery, and communications rooms. Damage control efforts by the crew halted further flooding (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Joshua Fulton/Released).
