Shipping needs to become cleaner, costs should be kept as low as possible for the ship owner and innovation is key to preserving the shipbuilding industry for the Netherlands. The special propulsion and fuels touches upon all these issues.

Whether a ship is considered 'clean' or energy efficient is largely determined by a ship's propulsion system and the fuel(s) it uses. Innovative solutions on the other hand, bring customers to the Dutch shipbuilding industry while at the same time contributing to an even cleaner and/or more cost efficient ship. This SWZ|Maritime special looks into all these aspects.

Our articles look into developments in 4 stroke medium speed diesel engines, different types of fuels, the use of DC grid systems, and an example of innovative hybrid propulsion technology on board the city of Amsterdam's new ferries, the IJ-Ferries 60 and 61.
