Each summer, after ten months of Field Service in a West African country, the Africa Mercy, managed by Mercy Ships International, sails off to the Astican Shipyard Gran Canaria for a six to eight week periodical maintenance, inspection and certifi cation cycle.

Annually, over forty volunteering engineers assist Mercy Ships throughout this dry-docking period. Amongst them in the summer of 2017, were ten Dutch engineers of Royal IHC, Lloyd’s Register, Vroon and Hartman Seatrade. On behalf of SWZ|Maritime and Mercy Ships, Marjolein Vleugel spoke with them about their experiences and investigated the role Dutch maritime organisations play in the world of Mercy Ships.
