Last year, Ordina, Damen Shipyards and the Royal Netherlands Navy's simulation cluster have developed a demonstrator of a virtual training environment.
The project was meant to test whether the Navy can benefit from the use of virtual reality to educate its students. In the demonstrator, students can walk around an Oceangoing Patrol Vessel (OPV). Furthermore, through the use of different gaming techniques, they can be taught to launch a FRISC (fast raiding interception and special forces craft).
The editors of the magazine Computable have nominated the demonstrator for the Computable Awards 2017 in the category Partner project of the year. For the Navy, the demonstrator has proven that virtual reality in combination with serious gaming is a promising technique and an appealing form of education for students.
