Five prestigious Maritime Awards will put the Dutch maritime industry's innovative strength in the spotlights. The jury members have now reviewed the entries and revealed their nominees.
The Maritime RNLN Van Hengel-Spengler Award, Maritime Innovation Award, Maritime KVNR Shipping Award, Maritime Designer Award and Maritime Award: KNVTS Ship of the Year will all be presented at the Maritime Awards Gala. The twelfth edition of this event is set to take place 6 November at the RDM Submarine Hall ("Onderzeebootloods") in Rotterdam.
Maritime RNLN Van Hengel-Spengler Award
This award is presented to the best operational innovation, designed by students up to 35 years of age, by the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN). The winning research has to be able to lead to new insights, concepts or innovations, that contribute to improving the operational deployment of naval units. The nominees are:
- LTZ 2 (TD) Guus van Fulpen – research into recycling of residual heat on board frigates by integrating absorption coolers with the diesel engines' cooling system
- Leon Rietveld – research into the possibilities of optimising submarine propulsion
- LTZ 2 Jordy San José Sánchez – research into the improvement and automation of the Target Motion Analysis (TMA)-process
Maritime Innovation Award
The Maritime Innovation Award stimulates innovative developments in maritime industry and puts the innovative force of the Dutch maritime and offshore suppliers in the spotlights. Every Dutch company, which has recently delivered a new product, service or process to the maritime industry, can enter for the award. The nominees are:
- Aqua-Logic – propeller water accelerator (through the use of the Bernuilli, Coanda and Venturie effect)
- CoVadem – realisation of cross-border, continuously available, current and predicted water depths for inland navigation
- Kotug International – heat recycling system (on the company's own vessels)
Maritime KVNR Shipping Award
The KVNR Shipping Award focuses on the improvement or renewal of a company’s operations, such as in the area of human resources, environmental management, fleet management or other innovative activities. The nominees are:
- Koole Engineering – in-house developed innovative tanker technology that allows the placement of independent and isolated cargo tanks
- Van Oord – far-reaching design requirements focused on durability and efficiency for the designs of sister vessels Vox Amalia and Vox Alexia (innovative type of trailing suction hopper dredger)
- Wagenborg Shipping – the innovative and sustainable cargo ship Egbert Wagenborg of the new EasyMax type, which also resulted in many Dutch employment opportunities
Maritime Designer Award
The Maritime Designer Award celebrates young maritime designers with an innovative approach, such as an original design method for a particular type of vessel or for the systems on board a ship. The award is supported by the "Secretariaat Samenwerkende Maritieme Fondsen". The nominees are:
- Joan van den Akker (TU Delft/TNO) – Capturing CO2 on board ships
- Marijn Hage (Nevesbu) – Abstract Volume Estimation Tool (VET)
Maritime Award: KNVTS Ship of the Year
The prestigious KNVTS Ship of the Year Award is presented annually to a Dutch designed/built and/or outfitted ship that can be characterised as groundbreaking and scores well on criteria such as environment, safety and profitability. The nominees are:
- Ferry IJveer 60 – designed and built by Holland Shipyards Group
- Sigma frigate KRI Raden Eddy Martadinata (KRI REM) – designed and partially built by Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding
- Multi mission Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) Seagull-301 – designed and built by De Haas Maassluis BV and Ginton Naval Architects BV
