The community of Den Helder and the province of North Holland will proceed to organise the European Maritime Day (EMD) for 2021.

The announcement was made public by the European Commission yesterday.

The European Maritime Day is a conference of “gathering of the minds” consisting of politicians, policymakers, private and public stakeholders involved with sea related matters.

It is also an event for businesses that are active in and around the seas, also known as the “blue economy”. In addition to the event there is a festival being arranged to create citizenship awareness about the seas and oceans. The EMD will be held at the Willemsoord complex with the theatre De Kampanje at the heart of the event.

The EMD is held annually around 20 May.

Province to choose EMD theme

The theme of EMD 2021 will be decided by the province and the community in discussion with the European Commission and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment (Europese Commissie en het Ministerie van Infrastructuur & Milieu).

Following its inception in 2008 it has gained 1000 participants. This year the event will take place at Poole, Great Britain. EMD will take place in consecutive order in Burgas (Bulgariae), Lissabon, Cork (Ireland), Den Helder, Ravenna (Italy), Brest (France) and Svendborg (Denmark) in the coming years.
