Malaysia is in the process of constructing a mega port in Pulau Carey on Carey Island. The endeavour is estimated to cost in the region of US$45 billion.

This port will be situated along the Malacca Strait, one of the busiest shipping routes in the world. It will be about 25 times the size of Singapore’s Sentosa Island. According to Singapore’s Independent newspaper, the Malaysian government plans to upgrade the nearby Port Klang in conjunction with this project.

With Port Klang and the Pulua Carey project working in unison, the government hopes to achieve a significant increase in trade links to the region and simultaneously reduce congestion. Malaysia has the fourth largest economy in Southeast Asia and is situated very close to Singapore making it a key player in the maritime arena.

A long time in the making

The Malaysian government has long held plans to build a new port and expand on the progress made by Port Klang, the eleventh biggest port in the world. It was previously reported that Malaysia intended to construct a terminal on Carey Island, however, information has emerged that plans are underway to construct an industrial complex.
