(With video) 100 metre long cargo ship Cabrera ran aground in bad weather and consequently sank oof the coast of Andros Island, Greece. The Hellenic Navy managed to rescue all nine crew members by helicopter.
According to the Hellenic Navy, the vessel grounded on a steep rocky coast and was sinking due to severe weather conditions. The video below shows the helicopter rescue operation.
The incident occurred 24 December while the Cabrera was en route to Tornio, Finland, from Larimna with a cargo of ferronickel. The grounding has caused breaches to both hull and fuel tanks, resulting in water ingress and oil leaking into the ocean. The hazmat team was informed, but had difficulty in responding due the weather conditions.
The cause of the grounding has not yet been confirmed. Some sources report the accident was caused by the weather, others speak of a navigation error and yet others of engine or some other technical failure. According to local authorities, the ship is to be considered a total loss.
