Royal IHC has been awarded the Mobilising More (MoMo) prize for an innovative seaweed harvesting project to promote adaptation to climate change in developing countries.
Project Manager R&D Bernardete Castro is responsible for the seaweed harvesting project at IHC MTI (the in-house R&D institute) and was presented with the prize at the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) Investor Forum in Amsterdam.
Prototype Harvester
IHC received 30,000 euros for the seaweed harvesting business case, which aims to upscale seaweed cultivation through mechanisation and modern cultivation techniques. Using its experience in developing maritime equipment, IHC has designed, built and tested a prototype harvester for cultivated seaweed.
IHC is taking the first steps towards the modernisation of this emerging maritime market worldwide through this pilot. 'Following the award of the MoMo prize, we plan to further fine-tune our business proposition in Indonesia and establish long-standing contacts there,' says Bernardete. 'It also gives us a renewed impetus for the realisation of the large-scale seaweed cultivation pilot.'
MoMo Initiative
The prize was made available by the MoMo initiative, consisting of Energy Research Centre Netherlands (ECN), the Netherlands Committee of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN NL) and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (NL MFA). The aim of the initiative is to turn ideas with strong potential to positively impact climate change into ‘investment-ready’ projects.
