(With extra pictures) The Concordia Group has recently delivered and commissioned a heavy cargo roll on/roll off (RoRo) coaster specifically designed for the efficient transportation of wind turbine parts.
The Rotra Vente is 141 m long and 20 m wide. It has a specially developed bow and extendable ramp. Both bow and ramp are controlled by hydraulic systems. The vessel’s RoRo feature makes it possible to drive cargo to and from the cargo deck. This type of (un)loading the vessel is to save cost for the vessel's charterer, Siemens.
Siemens will use the Rotra Vente mainly in the North Sea area for the transportation of masts, nacelles (engine rooms) and rotor blades for wind turbines. The specially designed roof protects the cargo from sea water and weather conditions.
Container Ship Conversion
The Concordia Group has designed and realised the vessel in ten months’ time. The base was a container vessel’s existing hull, which was transformed into a special service heavy cargo vessel with ramp. Apart from the special bow and ramp, the Rotra Vente also has a heavy cargo deck, a fully autonomous (de-)ballast installation and a specially designed propulsion system to match hull form and performance criteria.
The vessel has been converted in Werkendam and Hardinxveld-Giessendam, the Netherlands. Main contractor Holland Shipyards has been assisted by many companies from Werkendam and the surrounding area.
Meanwhile, the second vessel, the Rotra Mare, is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2017.
