The North Sea Farm foundation and Seaweed Platform will place a test set-up for growing seaweed fifteen miles off the coast of Scheveningen, the Netherlands.

The test set-up features frames that float just beneath the water's surface and is to be revealed in the port of Scheveningen today (4 October) before being towed to its location offshore.

Seaweed's Uses

After a first test, the Test Farm Texel in the North Sea off the coast of Dutch island Texel, seaweed farmers learnt what types of seaweed grow well in the rough waters of the North Sea. Seaweed is a basis for bio-plastics, can serve as food for humans and animals, adds to the diversity of the ecosystem in the sea and takes carbon dioxide from the air and water to convert it into biomass. Seaweed may also serve as raw material for 3D printing materials.

In time, the North Sea Farm foundation and Seaweed Platform hope to create a network of seaweed farms in the water between the turbines of offshore wind farms.
