(With video) Today is World Maritime Day. IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim has addressed the world on this year's theme: "Shipping: Indispensable to the World" and this afternoon, you can join the "Debate on Global Shipping's Future Challenges" through an IMO livestream.
World Maritime Day is an official United Nations day. Every year, it provides an opportunity to focus attention on the importance of shipping and other maritime activities and to emphasize a particular aspect of IMO's work.
The theme "Shipping: Indispensable to the World" was chosen to focus on the critical link between shipping and global society and to raise awareness of the relevance of the role of IMO as the global regulatory body for international shipping. The importance of shipping to support and sustain today's global society gives IMO's work a significance that reaches far beyond the industry itself.
