The Dutch Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) tightens its inspections on the quality of bunker oil and companies that produce it. The ILT will focus on the correct registration of bunker oil and blended products.
In addition, it will be examined whether unwanted or prohibited substances are blended with the oil. This practice could increase risks for both people and the environment.
The ILT will increase the number of inspections and take more samples. The organisation deems this necessary as from earlier inspections it became clear the components that make up the bunker oil were not always made known. This is contrary to European regulation, which states manufacturers are obliged to report the oil's components and the risks they carry.
RIVM Research
Apart from tightening its controls, the ILT has tasked the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) with extra research into the composition of bunker oil, the emissions when it is burnt and the consequences for people and the environment.
