(With video) A new, bigger sea lock is to improve access to Amsterdam for the ever larger ships that visit the Dutch capital.

The current sea lock, the Noordersluis, was completed in 1929 and was then the largest lock in the world. The new set of locks will be 500 metres long, 70 metres wide, and 18 metres deep. Construction is currently under way and is to be completed at the end of 2019.

SWZ Maritime's May issue features a special on hydraulic engineering with one of the articles detailing the new lock near Amsterdam at IJmuiden. Read it online now.
