The Danish Naval Architects of Knud E. Hansen have won the 2015 ShipPax Award for the design of the partly open top Con-Ro vessel Atlantic Star.

The award was presented during the 14th Annual Ferry Shipping Conference, which kicked off 13 April.

Con-Ro Design

The Atlantic Star's Con-Ro design incorporates Ro-Ro spaces amidships and container bays to both ends and was designed by Knud E. Hansen. This translates to a 3800 teu capacity and 28,900 m2 of Ro-Ro space. The Con-Ro design is said to yield other advantages too: a ten per cent increase in speed combined with a fifty per cent drop in fuel consumption per teu.

Other features of the Con-Ro design include a transom stern, high efficiency rudder and single screw fixed pitch propeller directly driven by a slow speed diesel engine. The engine room is located aft. There is a pipe duct between the engine room and the bow thruster room. All living quarters including navigation bridge are located midship on top of the Ro-Ro area.
