Danelec Marine has published a White Paper providing details on the new performance standards for Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS), which came into force in August 2015.
The White Paper notes that the new standards provide improved functionality; safer navigation; enhanced cyber security; standardization of displays, vocabulary and operation; reduced training needs; and smoother integration with Voyage Data Recorders, bridge alert management and bridge navigational watch alarm systems.
The Danelec Marine document describes why the new standards were needed and provides a detailed summary of changes in IEC 61174, IHO S-52 and IHO S-64. The old standards remain valid until August 2016, after this date all installed ECDIS products should be upgraded to comply with the new standards, subject to decisions of individual flag states.
The ECDIS White Paper is available for free download from the Danelec website.
