Dutch research organisation has awarded its first P.J.S. de Jong Innovation Award to fishing company Jaczon's project Sofic, which uses sonar to reduce unwanted bycatch.

TNO presents the award to a maritime innovation with real social impact. The award is named after former Prime Minister and Captain P.J.S. de Jong. He always succeeded in combining military precision and usefulness to society. The award supports scientists, institutions and companies that try to apply maritime developments in naval research in the national maritime industry.

Sofic

Jaczon's (a subsidiary of Cornelis Vrolijk) Sofic applies sonar knowledge to selectively catch fish. The use of sonar makes it possible to classify different species of fish in real time, which reduces unwanted bycatch.

The award was presented during TNO's Maritime & Offshore Innovation Day at the RDM Campus in Rotterdam in September.
