Boston Consulting Group and C.H. Robinson collaborated to examine how the Panama Canal Expansion in 2016 will impact logistics.

Their conclusions are:

  • The expansion could shift ten per cent of container traffic between East Asia and the U.S. from West Coast ports to East Coast ports.
  • The battleground on which U.S. ports compete for customers will move several hundred miles west, to a region that accounts for more than fifteen per cent of GDP.
  • Shippers and carriers will have to adapt their strategies and operations as logistics grows more complex.
