Jan De Nul Group has placed an order for a large self-propelled cutter suction dredger, JDN8069, at the Croatian shipyard Uljanik Brodogradiliste. At the same yard, the company's new multipurpose vessel Isaac Newton was launched last week.

Over the past seven years Jan De Nul Group has considerably expanded its fleet and is now adjusting its investment strategy to focus on niche markets.

Isaac Newton

The Isaac Newton can be deployed on a variety of projects: installing subsea cables, trench dredging and subsea rock installation. Jan de Nul chose a multipurpose vessel to be able to execute a project with one vessel thereby reducing mobilisation costs.

In cable-installation mode, the vessel will be capable of transporting and laying cable in a single length with a total weight of approximately 10,000 tonnes, which is more than any other vessel currently available.

Most Powerful Cutter Suction Dredger in the World

The new self-propelled cutter suction dredger the company has ordered has been designed by Jan De Nul’s in-house design department. The company now owns seven of such vessels.

The total installed diesel power will be over 40,000 kW, which is approximately fifty per cent more powerful than the J.F.J. De Nul, currently the largest cutter suction dredger in the world. The cutter power amounts to 8500 kW and the cutter ladder weighs around 2000 tonnes.
