(With link to interview) Ships operating in the North and South Poles will have to follow a mandatory international code of safety being developed by the IMO. Why is this Polar Code necessary?

Arctic shipping is on the rise, but these harsh and remote areas where infrastructure for things such as search and rescue, communication and clean-up is largely lacking require a particular way of operating a vessel.

IMO’s Polar Code covers all aspects of polar navigation for international shipping including design, construction, equipment, seafarer training, search and rescue protocols and environmental protection matters.

Listen to IMO’s Lee Adamson explain why the Polar Code is necessary on United Nations Radio.
