(With videos) Two and a half years after the accident, the Costa Concordia has reached Genoa for scrapping. The ship's owners say the total cost of the salvage operation could reach € 1.5 billion.
The towage of the Costa Concordia started on Wednesday 23 July and ended Sunday 28 July.
The Italian government had a strong wish for the ship to be scrapped in an Italian port as it would create employment. Since Genoa did not possess the necessary infrastructure for a scrapping of this scope, however, a special wharf had to be constructed leading to extra cost in the already expensive salvage operation. It is said total cost could reach € 1.5 billion.
The Parbuckling Porject has published a time lapse video of the towage of the wreck. Below two extra news videos about the Costa Concordia's last voyage.
